Photo quiz: What kind of wine is this?

I took this photo of fermenting wine recently when visiting a winery. But what kind of wine is it?

The first person to guess right in the comments wins an official Gray Report No Prize.*

barley wine? I actually have no idea what fermenting wine looks like, so another question is... it looks that *that*?

Sake? It looks like a darker rice though, and I can't make out any grape seeds.

After another look at the photo...Is it Tokaji?

Not a white and definitely not a red. Looks like some sort of grain. Given your affinity for Sake, I will say "Sake"

There appear to be husks in the mash, so maybe this is not rice wine, but some other grain ferment....

Natto wine?

Sake's a great guess -- you guys know me -- but that's not it. Not ice wine either.

It's not a grain.

Natto wine ... ewwwwwww.

I am guessing it is riesling.

Pinot Gris?

Not Tokaji, Riesling or Pinot Gris. In hide & seek terms, you're cold.

Mourvedre?

Or a nut? Walnut?

I'm for barley too!

Er, wait. Not a grain. Garlic?

Emily said...

Amarone?

Ana said...

It doesn't seems grapes... I'm confused!

W. Blake Gray said...

Nope, nobody's gotten it yet. It's not a grain or a nut or soju.

Re botrytis: I don't think it's possible, but can't categorically state that because that's not my area of expertise. Which should be a hint.

W. Blake Gray said...

Sorry, not garlic or Amarone either. (Mmm, garlic-roast pork and Amarone ...)

Mead???

Umm, Mexican?

agave wine?

Chardonnay, with maximum skin contact and a hunk of dryice tossed in for good measure, making a boatload of foam!

Ana said...

Coop, I thought something like that (not so complete though), but I associate dry ice with a release of a kind of smoke

Cranberry

W. Blake Gray said...

Not agave, not mead, not Chardonnay, and not cranberry ... but you're getting warmer (like fermentation).

Apple or pear wine?

Coop said...

Potato!!

W. Blake Gray said...

Which one, Jim?

Ana said...

I only call wine to something with grapes on it... I give up!

W. Blake Gray said...

Ana: In Vietnam I drank black rice wine, cherry wine, and all sorts of other wines, but my favorite was called Grape Wine. Man, I like that grape wine.

Jim Caudill said...

I'm thinking pear wine. At the International Eastern Wine Comp this year I was a judge on a panel of fruit wines and I was amazed at how tasty there were when considered just as a beverage and not with any wine hoo hah surrounding their evaluation....

W. Blake Gray said...

Big Jim, you are correct! This is pear wine from Fabbioli Cellars in Leesburg, Va. I didn't taste it, but loved the Tannat and Cabernet Franc Reserve. However, we all know what those look like.

Special thanks to Stephanie Pope, the associate winemaker here at Hess, who joined with me in the WTF sweepstakes to figure this out.

I'm feeling generous today: A certified Gray Report No Prize* for both Jim and Stephanie. Congratulations!

* This No Prize has no cash value, may not be combined with other prizes, may not be traded in for merchandise, won't get you a cup of coffee from a homeless shelter, but is nonetheless a worthy award of which you should be proud!

Yes, I know 'wine' is widely used to describe other beverages from fermented fruits. But I kind of feel unnatural to call 'wine' to other stuff than, well, wine :)
